2019 was a great year not only for re.flex but for the whole digital health ecosystem in general. With Germany and the UK starting to take action from the legislative point of view, helping the healthcare industry embrace the innovative systems created, now almost all countries in Europe are looking at this opportunity.
During Medica 2018 we begin talking with 5 knee orthosis companies. It was also the “aha moment” when we had no doubt that we were at the right time to enter the market and launch the product.
Up to this point, all the people who advised us did not believe what was going to happen and thought that the digitalization of the physical therapy will be a headline for 2030.
After meeting so many important stakeholders in healthcare, pharma, and insurance we trusted the feeling that things will move faster in Europe, as the US, Australia, and Canada were already taking advantage of this and with physicians accepting the idea that the patient’s home will be the hospital of the future.
Finding the right partner
We had an average of 7 meetings with each of the 5 potential strategic partners that were interested in what re.flex has to offer: efficient, cost-effective and scalable digital physiotherapy.
There were so many aspects to cover before agreeing on a deal. Just to add a few of the topics we’ve discussed at the meetings: business models, use-cases, evidence and reimbursement roadmap, sales strategy, distribution strategy, marketing strategy, team, values, and vision, etc.
We were fortunate to reach the final negotiations with 2 of the largest knee brace manufacturers in Germany.
One of them was also the leader in prosthetics, with 1 billion Euros in annual revenue.
It looked like a very promising and powerful strategic partner for us, but the decision tree and the corporate structure they had were not to our advantage.

The other strategic partner had different characteristics. Their family-owned company has 150 years of history, strong sales channels throughout Germany and a focus on orthosis and innovation. More to this, due to the compatibility of the products, the integration was fairly easy to do.
We chose them to be our strategic partners in Germany. Thank you Sporlastic for being part of our mission to innovate the physical therapy industry.
In August 2019 we announced the partnership in our networks or doctors and therapists, during a 2-day event in Lake Garda, Italy.
-Sporlastic is preparing to launch the world’s first orthosis with built-in digital physiotherapy features, powered by re.flex
-Our milestone for 2020 is to have the product available throughout the Sporlastic network in Germany and other several countries through strategic partners.
-10 pilots with hospitals and outpatient physical therapy clinics
Other stakeholders and focus
-We were overwhelmed by requests from all over the world but we are committed to maintaining our focus in the German market and other countries where we have the support of a strategic partner.
-Knee&hip implant manufacturing companies showed interest in re.flex and we are now preparing to sign a partnership for the US.
While the quality of the implants is the subject of constant improvements, the potential of using data gathered from the patient’s pathway can prove to be vital for the design and materials that will come in the future.
